I remember Benjie Nuevaespaña.
This is due to the recent controversy surrounding
Mylene Miranda and her Mister United Continents pageant. It turned out, to my
great surprise, that she also own the Mister Global
Tourism Philippines that was launched in 2013. The pageant was won by my bet
candidate number 11 Benjie Nuevaespaña who
also received four special awards, including Mister Photogenic and Best in
Swimwear. The bedimpled winner was supposed to represent the Philippines in the
Mister Global Tourism finals on December 5 to 14 in Johannesburg, South Africa
of that year.
I was excited
because I believed that Benjie could be one strong candidate for the
international title. However, he was not able to compete in
Johannesburg. The world finals did not push through due to the death of world
hero Nelson Mandela. It was announced that on March 2014, Benjie would
represent the country in Mister Tourism Global Petite, this time in Malaysia.
However, no more news about Benjie and the pageant he
was supposed to compete to. It turned out, I just knew recently, that he was
allegedly not paid well by the organizers. One of the handlers of the 2013 pageant also
revealed that his talents who were runners up in the pageant, were not given
their cash prizes in full as well (only 5 thousand???).
To all of these, Benjie remains silent and prefers to
be in the background. Perhaps in the future, when this kind, simple, humble,
young man will be ready, he will also tell his version of the story…
